Winners and Losers of Vikings Preseason Week 1

The Vikings lost in a boring 33-6 game against the Denver Broncos in their first Preseason game since August of 2019. These lists are in no particular order as well just listed.

5 Losers of todays game

1. Dakota Dozier:

Dozier started all 16 games for the Vikings in 2020 ranking as one of the worst offensive guards in the league. Going into this offseason we knew that Dozier was going to have a tough time making the roster and he proved that today. Dozier gave up multiple pressures and gave up a holding in the end zone leading to a safety against the Vikings.

2. Jake Browning:

Browning started off the game at quarterback for the Vikings going into it as the favorite to be the QB2 of the team after having a solid camp with Kellen Mond missing a significant amount of training camp. But Browning struggled throwing 5/10, 31 Yards and 1 Interception that turned into a pick six. Browning recorded a disappointing 17.1 QB Rating in the full quarter and some change of plays he had.

3. Ihmir Smith-Marsette:

I think going into the game many Vikings fans were excited to see Rookie ISM be the WR1/2 with no Adam Thielen or Justin Jefferson. Unfortunately for the fans he had a very underwhelming performance. ISM had only 2 catches for 12 yards on 6 targets.

4. Dylan Mabin:

I'm not necessarily sure what expecations were for Mabin but I can assure you he did not meet any of them. The guy gave up plays bottom line including a touchdown early in the game and got burnt by Teddy Bridgewater. Overall not a good day and likely not making the team as expected.

5. Stephen Weatherly:

I think that this could be the most important performance that was underwhelming. I wasn't expecting much out of him with the low snaps but Weatherly was just ineffective and the one penalty he had did not help him. I would say it was more the performances from the guys behind him in the depth chart that make him a loser today because his starting job is most definitely not a lock.

5 Winners of todays game

1. A.J. Rose Jr.:

I am not going to lie to any of you, but I had no idea who this guy was until he took his first carry of the game. Props to him though A.J. Rose Jr. had a very productive day and was one of the few bright spots of the offense. Rose had 25 carries for 100 yards along with one catch for 18 yards. Very good day for a guy who is trying to make a roster.

2. Wyatt Davis:

Not only is Wyatt Davis on this list because of how attrocious Dakota Dozier was, but he all around was just pretty solid. Davis had a play or two where he got beat and looked bad but what do you expect from a rookie playing his first game? I think it's important to look at some of the really solid plays he had over the few bad.

3. Patrick Jones II:

Rookie Patrick Jones II looked like a player who could make an instant impact for a DE needy team like the Vikings. What stood out most to me were the two really solid plays he made in the run game. He really showed his physicality and it was very intriguing to see what he could potentially do for this team in the future.

4. Kris Boyd:

Boyd played a very limited number of snaps but when he was out there he played great. Specifically his coverage on Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy was very good, including a pass break up he had on 4th down in the end zone to force a turnover on downs. Overall Boyd could be on his way to securing a cornerback roster spot on a team with a lot of depth in that position.

5. Greg Joseph:

Greg Joseph went 2/2 on Field Goals today being the only Minnesota Vikings points of the day. Joesph had a long of 34 yards on the day, it was more of what he didn't do(as in miss) than what he did today.

HM: Kellen Mond and Janarius Robinson
