Vikings starting QB Kirk Cousins will miss Sunday Night's game against the Packers due to COVID. The Vikings are set to start backup QB Sean Mannion in place of him with Kellen Mond at backup.
Zimmer is most likely losing his job after this season so it makes sense that he wants to start Mannion if he thinks he gives us the best opportunity to win because maybe somehow we do come out with a win and make the playoffs. The intriguing part of starting Mond is for the fans, we want an entertaining game where we can see if our Day 2 QB draft pick has any promise for the future.
I honestly think starting Mond could even benefit Zimmer if he plays well. If the Wilfs see Mond playing well with a promising future that could potentially totally redirect Mike Zimmer's future with the team. It goes from being seen as back-to-back missed playoff seasons to maybe finding a young piece of the future at quarterback that the Vikings haven't had since Teddy Bridgewater.
Now, aside from the game being more entertaining if Kellen Mond plays, he could legitimately give the Vikings a better chance to compete. Mond is a mobile quarterback which will be vital in a freezing and windy game at Lambeau Field. The Vikings will probably not throw the ball a whole lot which is a perfect situation for a young QB in his first start, hand the ball off and give him some short throws and designed runs.
Sean Mannion has started only 3 NFL games, in those games, he has thrown 0 touchdowns and 3 interceptions not to mention all of these games have come in Week 17 being pointless games. Mond in his senior season at Texas A&M threw for 19 touchdowns and rushed for 4 with only 3 interceptions. His Junior year he threw for 20 touchdowns and rushed for 8 in 13 games with 9 interceptions.
