The Vikings and have finalized a deal with, Los Angeles Rams Offensive Coordinator, Kevin O'Connell to make him the next Minnesota Vikings' Head Coach.
Kevin O'Connell is a 36-year-old new name in the NFL coaching scene. He was a part of the Washington coaching tree from 2017-2019, where he served as Kirk Cousins's QB Coach for one season.
Kevin O'Connell's coaching background is the most intriguing part about him for me. As I mentioned he was a part of the Washington Assistants like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan. O'Connell was promoted to OC in 2019 and considered a candidate for the Washington HC job in 2020 before they chose Ron Rivera. In 2020-2021 he served as the Offensive Coordinator under mastermind Head Coach, Sean McVay, just as Matt LeFleur once did.
Now that we are caught up on the coaching background of O'Connell, let's get into the type of coach he is. O'Connell is an offensive-minded coach who has been highly praised by his superiors everywhere he has coached. He has spent time with plenty of great coaches throughout his coaching journey and it is intriguing to see if he follows in down the same successful path as McVay and Shanahan.
This is a huge hire for the Vikings if Kevin O'Connell turns out like his past co-workers and bosses. The Rams with Head Coach Sean McVay in 5 seasons have gone 55-26 with 3 division titles, 2 super bowl appearances, and 1 super bowl win in the 2021 season. The Packers under Head Coach Matt LaFleur in 3 seasons have gone 39-10 with 3 division titles and 2 conference championship appearances. The 49ers under Head Coach Kyle Shanahan in 5 seasons have gone 39-42(with a lot of injuries) with 1 division title and a super bowl appearance.
As you can see, Kevin O'Connell being apart of the Washington Assistant coaching tree is a comforting thing to know for Vikings fans. If all goes well and Kevin O'Connell is able to replicate the form of these fellow coaches the Vikings have a real shot at competing at a high level for years to come.
