Vikings HC Candidates 1.0

Updated: Jan 15, 2022

With Mike Zimmer being fired the Vikings have one of the most intriguing places for a Coach to want to be. Below I will have some of my HC Candidates so if you are coming from my Instagram after a certain interview with the Vikings just scroll down to find the Coach!

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy: Bieniemy is a 52-year-old Offensive Coordinator and long overdue for a Head Coaching job in the NFL. Bieniemy has ties back to Minnesota being a former Assistant Head Coach and running backs coach for the Vikings. Chiefs HC Andy Reid has said himself that Bieniemy is and has been ready for a HC job after somehow not getting one last offseason.

Bieniemy has had the great opportunity to learn alongside a great coach like Andy Reid. The Chiefs offense has been a powerhouse since he took the Offensive Coordinator job in 2018, of course, thanks to guys like Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce. The Vikings have a few weapons themselves though in Justin Jefferson, Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and Irv Smith Jr. The Vikings definitely could be a good place for Bieniemy to call home.

Draft Network's Jaimie Eisner noted that Bieniemy is favored to win the Vikings HC job. Bieniemy is one of the more intriguing names on the list of possible candidates and the Vikings would be lucky to land a guy of his caliber.

Rams OC Kevin O'Connell: O'Connell is a 36-year-old new and smaller name in the Head Coaching candidate list. He was a part of the Washington coaching tree from 2017-2019, where he served as Kirk Cousins's QB Coach for one season.

Kevin O'Connell's coaching background is the most intriguing part about him for me. As I mentioned he was a part of the Washington Assistants like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan. O'Connell was promoted to OC in 2019 and considered a candidate for the Washington HC job in 2020 before they chose Ron Rivera. He now is the Offensive Coordinator under mastermind Head Coach, Sean McVay, just as Matt LeFleur once was.

Now that we are caught up on the coaching background of O'Connell, let's get into the type of coach he is. O'Connell is an offensive-minded coach who has been highly praised by his superiors everywhere he has coached. He has spent time with plenty of great coaches throughout his coaching journey and it is safe to say he should get a shot at a Head Coach job after this season with the Los Angeles Rams.

Bills OC Brian Daboll: Daboll is a 46-year-old coach who has spent time at Alabama, New England, Kansas City, and now Buffalo with the Bills.

In my opinion, Daboll probably has the best chance to be the next Vikings Head Coach. I'm not sure if he is my favorite of the three, but I do like him a lot and he is growing on me as I do more research and write this.

Daboll has helped the Bills make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons with one of the best Offenses in the league. It is worth mentioning that Daboll is coaching next to Sean McDermott, a defensive HC, showing that he can handle the offensive side of the ball himself already. Of course, he has Josh Allen and even former Vikings WR Stefon Diggs, but it is pretty evident the Vikings have even better weapons than Daboll does now. Joining the Vikings would give Daboll a lot to work with especially with the Vikings running game, which has been inconsistent in Buffalo due to personnel.
